"I think ultimately the best way that you can have the least carbon footprint and still enjoy skiing now and into the future, is get into backcountry skiing and snowboarding."

MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE SNOW BOWL
The Middlebury College Snow Bowl is closely associated with Middlebury College. The Snow Bowl is also linked to the success of becoming the first completely carbon neutral ski area in the country, which is due to student efforts, says Peter Mackey, Snow Bowl Manager6.
According to Mackey, the initiative to become completely carbon neutral was driven by several students who were taking an Environmental Economics class with Professor Jonathan Isham. This class seeks to understand the effects of global climate change in association with its effects on the economy of surrounding businesses. A similar initiative was taken by Middlebury students and this resulted in Mad River Glen’s Ski Green if you can campaign7.
The Middlebury College Snow Bowl has become the first carbon neutral area by starting with simple initiatives such as efficient lighting and low-flow water systems then moving onto the greater project of offsetting their emissions with Native Energy. Since Middlebury College Snow Bowl is associated closely with Middlebury College, it has bought the Snow Bowl $7,138 of carbon offsets to compensate for a total of 679.9 tons of carbon dioxide emissions8.
